The Ancestors named you Horus
2020, 46”L x 44”W, hand-dyed cotton fabric, stone lithograph on cotton fabric, Bògòlanfini, bark cloth,machine-quilted, hand-embellished.
This is another of the Birds Are My People series, inspired by my time as the artist in residence at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey (CBOP) in Maitland, FL. I draw the birds there every week. Here the bird is a peregrine falcon, modeled on ‘Chopper’ - who had to have his injured wing partially amputated to save his life. I was very happy when staff at CBOP recognized Chopper without being told.
The tree branch is Ugandan bark cloth, machine quilted and beaded with tiny seed beads - all sewn in! The house has many pieces of Bògòlanfini - malian mud cloth. The figure is a stone lithograph on cotton fabric. The litho stone was too big for the fabric I had, so I layered pieces of fabric over the stone and printed it all at once. if you look closely at the yellow figure you will see the layer lines.
